Building for extreme weather conditions
Future-proof, climate-proof
Climate change has long been a reality, and extreme weather events such as storms, floods and heatwaves are increasing worldwide. This poses new challenges for the construction industry: Buildings must become more resilient in order to minimize damage and ensure the safety of residents. Ever since the floods in the Ahr valley, which cost 135 people their lives, resilient architecture has also been a topic of discussion in Germany.
Challenges posed by extreme weather conditions:
- Storms: stronger wind speeds and more frequent storms require stronger structures and more resistant facades.
- Floods: Increasing heavy rainfall events and rising sea levels are putting buildings near the coast and river basins at risk.
- Heat waves: Longer and more intense heat waves require improved thermal insulation and effective shading systems.
- Droughts: Drought and water shortages can jeopardize the stability of buildings and affect vegetation.
- Earthquakes: In earthquake-prone regions, special construction techniques are required to protect buildings.
Resilient architecture: strategies and measures
Resilient construction projects require innovative concepts to withstand extreme weather events.
First and foremost, of course, is the choice of the right location, as construction projects in high-risk areas should be avoided. However, as we all know, you can’t always choose the location and in some regions of the world natural risks are a daily occurrence (e.g. earthquakes in Japan).
In Germany, flooding is an increasingly serious threat – here, raised foundations, watertight basements and non-return valves can significantly reduce the threat.
Sustainable construction methods can also protect against environmental risks as a side effect. Green roofs and façades, for example, improve the microclimate, which not only reduces energy consumption but also protects buildings from overheating in extremely hot weather.
Overall, local conditions must be considered with foresight, with flexible construction methods ensuring long-term adaptation to climatic changes.
