Infrastructure: Construction site Germany

A country needs construction work

Since the collapse of the Carola Bridge in Dresden at the latest, it should be clear to everyone in Germany that we have an infrastructure problem – probably a big one. In the meantime, complaints about this are getting louder and louder in politics: “dilapidated infrastructure”, “potholes on country roads” and “decades of neglect”.
For this reason, it’s time to take stock and look ahead to the coming years. What challenges do we face and how can the construction industry prepare for them?

Our construction sites:

  • Roads and bridges: Many freeways, federal highways and country roads are under heavy strain due to decades of use and lack of renovation. Bridges such as the Rahmede viaduct on the A45 have already had to be closed because they were in acute danger of collapsing. Massive investment in renovation and new construction is required here.
  • Rail network: The German rail network is not only outdated, but also overloaded. Delays and breakdowns are the order of the day. Electrification in particular leaves a lot to be desired – just 61% of the network is electrified. The federal government is planning to invest billions in modernization to make the system competitive again.
  • Energy and supply grids: The energy transition requires a massive modernization of the electricity grids in order to efficiently feed in renewable energies. At the same time, water and wastewater systems need to be repaired, as decades-old pipes are increasingly causing problems in many places.
  • Digital infrastructure: Despite all efforts, Germany is lagging behind in terms of fiber optic expansion and the 5G network. Especially in rural areas, there are still dead spots and slow internet connections that urgently need to be expanded.
