Green building certifications

LEED, BREEAM and DGNB in comparison

Focus on sustainable construction: Why certifications are crucial

Sustainability has long been more than just a trend; it has become the guiding principle of modern construction projects. Green building certifications such as LEED, BREEAM and DGNB set global standards for ecological, economic and socially responsible construction and help building owners, investors and users to objectively assess the quality and environmental compatibility of buildings. But what are the differences between the systems and which one is suitable for which project? 3XPERTS provides a compact overview and practical guide for making the right choice.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design)

LEED is the most internationally recognised system and focuses on energy efficiency, sustainable locations, water consumption, materials and interior quality. Particularly innovative technologies and CO₂-neutral approaches are also rewarded. LEED is ideal for international projects and building owners who value global recognition.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method)

BREEAM is the oldest certification system and is particularly widespread in Europe. It is characterised by its flexibility and takes into account numerous criteria ranging from energy and health to innovation. BREEAM can be easily adapted to local conditions and is suitable for a wide range of building types, from schools to hotels.

DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council)

DGNB stands for a holistic approach to sustainability: in addition to ecological aspects, economic and social criteria are also given equal weighting. DGNB certification takes into account life cycle costs, user comfort and site quality. It is particularly attractive for German-speaking countries and for projects focussing on social added value.

Which system suits which building project?

The choice of certification system depends on various factors:

  • Location: DGNB is the leader in Germany, while LEED is widely used internationally and BREEAM throughout Europe.
  • Focus: Those who value innovation and energy efficiency are well advised to choose LEED. For holistic sustainability and long-term economic efficiency, DGNB is recommended.
  • Building type: BREEAM scores highly for specialised properties such as hotels or hospitals, DGNB for public buildings and LEED for international projects.
  • Budget and requirements: LEED is considered to be particularly comprehensive, but can be more cost-intensive than DGNB or BREEAM.

Green building certifications provide guidance and create added value for all parties involved. The right choice depends on the individual project goals, the location and the desired focal points. 3XPERTS supports you in finding the right certification system and making your construction project sustainable and future-proof.
