Automated inspection and documentation
Today, the modern construction site looks more like a high-tech laboratory than a traditional scaffold made of concrete and steel. Drones and robotic systems no longer just take on peripheral tasks, but also optimize central processes such as inspection, surveying and documentation. Whether high-resolution photogrammetry or intelligent material transportation – automation increases efficiency, quality and occupational safety. At 3XPERTS, we shed light on the most important technology components and present an impressive practical example from China..
Areas of application and technical basics
- Aerial Surveying & Photogrammetry
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) use LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors and high-resolution cameras to capture terrain models and building conditions in a matter of seconds. AI-supported algorithms convert the raw data into precise 3D models, on the basis of which material volumes are calculated and deviations from the plan are detected - Robots for material transport and handling
Autonomous ground robots take on repetitive transportation tasks: They deliver tools, building materials or samples to where they are needed – completely without human control. Intelligent obstacle detection ensures an uninterrupted process on uneven terrain. - Automated inspection routes
Pre-programmed flight and travel routes allow drones and mobile robots to autonomously fly over construction sites several times a day. Deviations from target conditions are automatically marked and made available to project managers via cloud reporting. - Documentation automation
Robotic vehicles and drones filter relevant image and sensor data from millions of measuring points. Thanks to OCR and AI text analysis, construction diaries and inspection reports can be generated almost in real time, largely eliminating the need for manual logging.
Practical example: use of drone swarms for highway construction in China
A pioneering project took place in Sichuan province in 2023: A Chinese consortium deployed a swarm of over 50 drones simultaneously to expand a 120 km long highway. Equipped with LiDAR, multispectral cameras and AI coordination software, the UAVs flew predefined routes every day and delivered a complete digital terrain model dataset in just seven days.
- Increased efficiency: Data acquisition was 70% faster than with traditional surveying teams.
- Cost reduction: Thanks to Swarm coordination with minimal bureaucracy and reduced personnel deployment, surveying costs fell by around 25%.
- Quality gain: The high measurement density enabled a point cloud with an accuracy of less than five centimetres, which virtually eliminated planning errors.
This example clearly shows that swarm intelligence and AI-based flight path optimization open up completely new possibilities for large-scale projects. However, robust data networks, cloud architectures and sophisticated security concepts are required for similar successes to become a reality in Europe. This is where our sister company B3YOND-IT provides support with scalable cloud solutions, real-time data platforms and comprehensive cybersecurity.
